Hello readers! Today's topic are the types of impact that technological advancements have on children-good and bad.
Children of the now and of the future, are growing up and getting to know life with technological devices and advancements that I only saw in the movies during my childhood that seemed life times away from existing. Now, being a parent myself, I have had to learn to adjust to these changes, as well as be able to assist and navigate my own child through his technological journey. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and Smart TVs to name a few, are what help us reach the internet, the world wide web and all it has to offer-the good and the bad. On that note, let's take some time to go over what the good and the bad are that society's children may be impacted by and how to find balance.
According to wgu.edu (2021), "research shows that the average 8-10 year old spends almost 8 hours a day with a variety of media, and older children and teenagers spend around 11 hours per day with media", (para. 3). The negative side of technology is the expectations from children to have quick results and outcomes and results in lowered attention spans, there is increased risk and lack of privacy with hackers, children who spend a lot of time using media are at a higher risk of depression, children can suffer from obesity due to inactivity, falling grades, bullying, and social interaction issues. The positive expectations are that technology has the capability of helping children learn with TV programs or educational apps., classroom tools that help children learn school material, technology can help prepare for future tech careers, and can help children to improve multitasking, visual-spatial development, problem solving and decision making skills. Some recommendations that adults and parents can do to help keep balance in children's lives is to avoid exposure to technology with children under the age of 2, set boundaries for digital device use and keep up to date on keeping children safe online and software updated and let children have other non-technological outlets of play time and activity (wgu.edu, 2021).
